Ongoing Research Projects

Research projects led by Dr. Alberga as a Principal Investigator and trainees in her lab:

  • his project aims to better support children and families with higher risks of obesity by addressing social determinants of health. The approach centers on training family navigators to help families overcome social and structural barriers that impact child health. The research unfolds in three phases: needs assessment (umbrella review and interviews), co-development of the intervention with families and professionals, and pilot testing in one clinic. The goal is to create an evidence-based, scalable model that improves healthcare access and supports healthier outcomes for children and families navigating systemic barriers and disproportionally affected by inequities.

  • This Chair is a combination of several research projects over a 5-year period working with youth and several national and international partners aiming to de-implement unintended harm of pediatric obesity interventions and instead optimize the uptake and implementation of the new evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Ultimately, we aim to better understand intrinsic and extrinsic implementation barriers in primary care with the ultimate goal of improving access to care, quality of care and health outcomes of children and families affected by obesity.

  • This project aims to develop a smartphone app to help Canadian adolescents improve their health habits and mental wellbeing. It builds on a successful adult program and will be co-designed with teens to ensure it’s engaging and relevant. The app aims to empower youth with health literacy, reduce risky behaviors, and prevent chronic diseases later in life. It also focuses on reaching underserved communities and will share its findings through academic and public presentations.

  • This project aims to create a dialogue tool called "Conversation Cards for Pregnancy" to facilitate open, non-stigmatizing conversations on sensitive topics that are important to pregnant individuals to discuss with their prenatal care providers. In collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of experts across Canada, this project will be testing a prototype dialogue tool to determine feasibility of implementation and collecting perceptions and experiences from both pregnant individuals and providers when using these cards in prenatal care settings across Canada. This is supported by a CIHR Early Career Investigator Operating Grant awarded to Angela Alberga (NPA) and Tamara Cohen (Co-PA) in collaboration with their national team of experts across Canada.

  • CIHR Project Grant

This project explores the often-overlooked psychosocial benefits and harms of pediatric obesity interventions. Working closely with adolescents, caregivers, clinicians, and researchers, the team will review how psychosocial outcomes—such as self-esteem, mood, and weight-based teasing—are measured and reported across existing treatments. They will also conduct interviews to identify additional unrecognized experiences within obesity care. Findings will help ensure that future interventions better reflect the full range of outcomes that matter to youth and their families.

  • We are currently conducting a systematic review of harms, adverse events and side effects of pharmacotherapy interventions in adults with obesity.

  • This study focuses on improving care for Canadian adolescents who have both obesity and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These youth face higher health risks and often struggle to access treatment that meets their unique needs. The project will gather insights from 15–30 healthcare providers through focus groups to better understand how clinicians can support and treat these teens more effectively. The goal is to make care more inclusive, equitable, and tailored for marginalized and underserved populations.

  • This project aims to better understand attitudes and beliefs about health and weight among undergraduate health science students. The goal of this project is to understand where the intervention needs are among undergraduate students to help inform the creation of interventions and potential changes to undergraduate and training curriculum to improve attitudes and understanding of the complexity of body weight regulation and obesity among students aiming to become future healthcare professionals.
